History of Edinburgh Airport

The Edinburgh Airport began as Turnhouse Aerodrome in 1915 in order to serve military purposes. It housed the 603 City of Edinburgh Squadron. The aeroplanes arrived disassembled in packages and were put together at Turnhouse. When the RAF came into being the name of the airport was changed to RAF Turnhouse.

In the 1940s after the war was over, the airport with an expanded and paved 3900 foot runway began to be used for commercial purposes. In 1947 British European Airways began serving Edinburgh and London. The airport was still owned by the military, but its future use as a commercial site was evident.

Five years later, in 1952 the runway was lengthened to 6000 feet in order to be able to receive larger planes such as the Vampire FB5s. As more and more passengers were using the airport, a new terminal was constructed in 1956.

Transfer of ownership to the Ministry of Aviation helped to provide for better service for the growing number of users of the airport. By 1971 the new owners had expanded the runway and enlarged the terminal.

Problems with crosswinds for planes landing caused the changing and lengthening of the runway. This new runway can now accommodate modern jetliners. The old terminal and hangars were converted into a modern cargo centre.

In 1977 the name was changed to Edinburgh Airport. The Queen was on hand to officially open the airport under the new name.

Ten years later, the BAA was privatised so the airport left private ownership.

Since the turn of the century, many changes have taken place at Edinburgh Airport. These include renovations to the terminal building, the opening of a short-term multi-story car park and the building of a new traffic control tower.

The advent of the Scottish Parliament will surely add to the value of Edinburgh Airport and will increase the number of travellers who use it.
